In last week’s post I talked about the importance of protecting your hands to preserve their youthfulness and beauty. What a dramatic opening sentence about HANDS, right?! But it’s the truth. While your hands as a whole are exposed to the elements on the daily, you can’t forget your nails.
Keeping your nails well manicured and your polish chip-free is just as important to me as wearing perfume, and we all know how I feel about having a signature scent. Polished nails add the final touch to your look that pulls everything together. Nobody likes a chipped nail. It’s that distracting itch you HAVE to scratch. Once you start picking, it’s all over. And I know you know exactly what I mean.
Like my perfume, I have learned what nail colors work for me and which ones just don’t. For example, you will never see me caught dead with a canary yellow nail. Honestly I don’t think anyone needs to be caught dead with a canary yellow nail, but that’s a separate path entirely I don’t wish to go down – at least not in today’s post.
I have worn the same small collection of nail colors interchangeably for many years. I am driven towards more neutral and classic shades that work well with all skin tones and all seasons. But let’s not confuse “basic” with “classic.” And a side note: all of these shades come in the gel polish version except for #4.
These Are My Top 5 Go-To Nail Polishes For Life:
Sand Tropez by Essie
This shade is the PERFECT nude for my skin tone. I’m not into the whole pinky-nude shades because pink is not “nude.” Nude is nude. “Sand Tropez” matches my skin almost exactly, but it has a hint more brown that gives it a little pop. The color goes on opaque which is another thing I love about this formula. It’s so hard to find a good nude color that isn’t somewhat transparent. Even though this is an awesome match for my skin tone, I’ve seen this color on a number of other people and it looks amazing.
I Cannoli Wear OPI by OPI
I swear I searched through 50 shades of grey before I came across this one. Grey was a hard color for me to settle on for some reason, but I’m glad I didn’t settle. While grey can look somewhat “blah” I think this one has a great level of brightness to it that keeps it majorly chic. If you love neutral polishes but don’t want to go to your usual ballet slipper pink, this heather grey is such a gorgeous option. Just imagine this with dainty gold midi rings (insert “praying hands” emoji).
Funny Bunny by OPI
White. A color I never ever thought I would EVER wear on my nails. I know I said that these were all colors I’ve worn for years now, but this one is the exception. At the beginning of #summersixteen, I felt the urge to just try a white. I consulted with my manicurist for some help and TG I did. I really dislike when white polishes look cheap like Whiteout so I wanted to avoid that at all costs. She told me that this was a much more subtle white that doesn’t scream at you. You could say that I’m a little obsessed now.
Hutch by Olivia Palermo x Ciate
There are few things more classic than a true red nail. And you guys know I love accenting with red. My mom always wore red polish growing up and from what I remember, I used to copy her all the time. Also, Olivia Palermo lives for a red nail and I live for Olivia so…yes, this polish IS necessary. Whenever I want to feel extra elegant and mature, I go with red. Always chic and never out of style.
Lincoln Park After Dark by OPI
Last, but DEFINITELY not least. It’s the sexiest and vampiest almost-black purple. I love that it doesn’t have any shimmer to it, which is actually really difficult to find in a vampy purple. This is my #1 go-to fall and winter color, but it totally works for summer too. Whenever I go to the salon, they always have multiples of this bottle for obvious reasons. I cannot say enough about this cult OPI shade.
What are some of your go-to favorite nail colors? I would love to add to my rotation! Let me know in the comments!
